Pigmentation refers to the various colours present in the skin, ranging from freckles, age spots, and sun spots to larger areas of discolouration, such as Melasma. This condition has many causes, including genetics, hormones, sun damage, and trauma.

 

Melanocytes are special cells responsible for producing melanin, which determines skin colour. Although the number of melanocytes is the same regardless of skin type, the amount of melanin they produce varies, resulting in darker or lighter skin.

 

Hypopigmentation and hyperpigmentation occur when melanin levels are altered, leading to areas of lighter or darker skin, respectively. This happens when melanocytes are damaged or not functioning correctly, affecting melanin production. Triggers like the sun, heat, injury, and hormones stimulate melanin production in the deeper layers of the skin, which then rises to the surface, resulting in freckles and sun spots.

Because some pigmentation sits deep within the dermis of the skin, it can be challenging to see and treat. Melasma is particularly difficult to treat as melanin can sit both superficially and deeply in the skin.
